How Permanent Dental Implants Can Help Restore Your Smile and Tooth Functionality

It’s easy to take a youthful smile for granted. Most people are born with healthy teeth and gums; a beautiful smile becomes a natural part of ourselves. However, most people eventually develop cavities, and some experience dental problems severe enough to result in tooth loss.

Tooth loss can occur for various reasons, including accidents, injuries, and decay. In recent years, dental implant technology has seen advances that allow practitioners like Dr. Colby Smith and his team at Granite Bay Dentistry, Granite Bay, California, to use dental implants to help patients regain their youthful smiles and tooth functionality.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are designed to replace one or more missing teeth completely and function identically to a natural tooth. Dental implants are comprised of three parts:

  • Implant post: The post is a bio-compatible titanium screw surgically inserted into a patient’s jawbone below the gum line. The screw post replaces the missing root of a patient’s tooth. When an implant is placed, the titanium screw begins the osseointegration process. Osseointegration occurs when the implanted screw fuses with your jawbone, resulting in an ultra-strong foundation.
  • Abutment: The abutment is a small screw-like protrusion that attaches to the top of the post when the implant finishes the process of fusing to the patient’s jawbone. The implant restoration is attached to the implant post via the abutment.
  • Implant restoration: The implant restoration is the last component of your implant process. Once your implant post has healed and the abutment is attached to the post, Dr. Smith will insert a porcelain crown atop the abutment. The restoration looks and functions exactly like a natural tooth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Besides restoring your beautiful smile, dental implants also offer many other benefits. One significant advantage is that implants don’t get cavities. Most importantly, dental implants help prevent bone loss that results from the loss of a tooth. And finally, your bite force will be fully restored, making it easier for you to enjoy the foods you love.
