Porcelain Crowns (CAPS)

Repair and Restore Damaged Teeth with Dental Crown Treatment

Accidents can happen despite your efforts to avoid mishaps at home, on the job or on the sports field, leaving you with a fractured or broken tooth. Your tooth can also be damaged by untreated decay. Fortunately, damaged teeth can be repaired and restored with dental crowns. At Granite Bay Dentistry, we offer tooth crown treatment to residents of Granite Bay, CA, and nearby communities.

The role of dental crowns in repairing damaged teeth

If you have a tooth that’s weak from severe decay or damaged from dental trauma, Dr. Colby Smith may recommend a dental crown to repair the damage, strengthen the tooth’s structure and protect it from further breakage. Crowns are protective caps or coverings that strengthen, protect and stabilize damaged teeth so they can continue to be used.

Porcelain crowns make an excellent choice for repairing teeth that have sustained severe damage. They’re durable, long-lasting and have a natural-looking tooth-colored appearance, making them less conspicuous when you smile.

Cosmetic crowns are often used to conceal imperfections on healthy teeth to improve the appearance of a person’s smile. Porcelain crowns can conceal chips, cracks, stains and other dental flaws to give your smile a brighter, seamless appearance. Crowns can also be used to alter the size or shape of a tooth to make it more uniform with the rest of your smile.

When dental crowns are needed

Crowns can be used for both restorative and cosmetic reasons. Some situations require a crown in order to repair a tooth and restore its usefulness. In other cases, porcelain caps for teeth may be recommended for cosmetic purposes. Dental crowns are also used to supplement other dental treatments. Here are some situations when a dental crown is needed:

  • To restore a broken tooth or keep weak, fractured teeth from crumbling
  • To support a tooth that’s been treated with a large filling
  • To complete root canal therapy to save a severely decayed or damaged tooth from extraction
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To act as a replacement tooth on top of a dental implant

The dental crown process

Using advanced dental technology, dental crown treatment can now be completed in a single dental visit! First, Dr. Smith will evaluate your situation to determine if a crown is the best course of action for treatment. If so, we’ll prepare your tooth by cleansing it of bacteria and decay, if needed, and filing it down on the top and sides to make room for the placement of a crown. Dr. Smith will then perform a 3D optical scan of your tooth to have a custom-designed porcelain crown for your use. This process used to take several weeks to complete, but with Cerec CAD/CAM technology we can now have your beautiful porcelain crown ready on the same visit. No more temporary crowns needed while your permanent crown is being fabricated.
